The Lagos State Government has sealed a two-storey building on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho Local Government Area after it partially collapsed on Wednesday evening, trapping six construction workers.

The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., comes less than two weeks after four people died in a three-storey building collapse at No. 325 Bornu Street, Ebute Meta.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other first responders swiftly arrived at the scene.

“A two-storey building has collapsed at 4, Modupeola Street, Mangoro bus stop, Alimosho. The cause of the incident was not immediately known. Government officials have launched a probe into the incident,” Omotoso said.

He added that five victims were rescued and taken to a nearby private hospital, while one who sustained fractures and bruises was transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Surgical Emergency in stable condition.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the building, originally a bungalow, had been under conversion into a two-storey structure while occupants remained on the ground floor.

“The collapse affected the rear section of the building. Five construction workers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. No fatality was recorded,” said Controller General of the agency, Margaret Adeseye.

Residents told journalists that construction was ongoing when the collapse occurred, with some neighbours raising the alarm during heavy rainfall before emergency responders arrived.

On Thursday, the Lagos State Building Control Agency sealed the premises as investigations into the cause of the collapse continued.

The incident adds to growing concerns over frequent building collapses in Lagos, where authorities are facing renewed calls to strengthen enforcement of safety regulations.
