By Aishat Momoh. O.
A teenage boy identified as Tersoo Veregh was found hanging from the roof of his father’s house on Lorkyaako Street, High Level area of Makurdi, Benue State, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, according to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
Makama reported that the deceased’s father discovered his son’s lifeless body around 2 a.m. after stepping out of his room to ease himself.
“The deceased’s father discovered the tragic scene at about 2:00 a.m. on October 4 when he came out of his room and found his son hanging from the roof of the building,” Makama wrote.
Upon receiving the report, police officers from ‘B’ Division, Makurdi, led by the Divisional Police Officer, visited the scene, photographed the body, and evacuated it to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) morgue for preservation.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, said the command has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
“We are aware of the incident, and for now, the investigation is ongoing,” Edet told journalists in a telephone interview on Sunday.
This latest incident adds to the growing number of reported suicide cases in Benue State and across Nigeria.
In July 2024, a 17-year-old student in Gboko reportedly took his life over academic and social pressure, while in 2023, a 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide after being reprimanded for a suspected pregnancy.
Experts have linked the rising cases of suicide in Nigeria to economic hardship, family conflicts, and untreated mental health conditions, with psychiatrists warning of poor access to mental health care and limited social support systems in the country.
