The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo on Monday night.
The incident, which occurred around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel, was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps spokesperson, Mr. Abass Yusuf.
According to the statement, Omoyele was driving home alone after official duties when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, riddling it with bullets.
“It is deeply troubling that the Amotekun Commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner,” Yusuf said.
He added that, shortly after the attack, about 15 masked men stormed Omoyele’s private residence. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.
Yusuf described the attack as a direct assault on the state’s local security framework and urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements to security agencies for prompt action.
“The attack is not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of a localised security structure,” he stated.
The commander reportedly sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under protective watch.
The case has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident comes amid heightened tension in the state following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s directive for a full investigation into the recent killing of some residents of Akinlalu Community by Amotekun operatives. The governor has also dispatched a government delegation to the affected community to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
