The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has officially banned all forms of sign-out celebrations by graduating students, warning that violators will face strict disciplinary actions, including rustication, expulsion, or withdrawal of certificates.

The directive was contained in a circular issued on Tuesday in Benin by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, and addressed to members of the university community.

According to the circular, the decision followed a management meeting held on Monday, where the university reaffirmed its earlier Senate resolution prohibiting sign-out activities on campus.

“The management declared that no sign-out celebration of any kind, including signing on T-shirts and playing of music, will be tolerated,” Bobola stated.

He noted that the ban also extends to disorderly conduct, unauthorised gatherings, and parading around the campus in vehicles. “Indiscriminate parading around the campuses in any brand of vehicle will not be permitted,” the circular warned.

Bobola further announced that unauthorised vehicles would not be allowed into the university campuses throughout the final week of the second-semester examinations, adding that large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations are strictly prohibited.

“Photographers will not be permitted to mount photo stands or galleries for the purpose of such celebrations,” he added.

The Registrar also cautioned parents and guardians of final-year students against visiting the university premises during the final days of examinations.

“Parents and guardians of final-year students are advised to stay away from faculty, school, or institute premises, especially on the last day of examinations,” he said, stressing that the measure was to maintain order, discipline, and academic decorum on campus.

He warned that any breach of the directive would attract severe disciplinary sanctions, including the withdrawal of certificates, rustication, or expulsion of offenders.

UNIBEN now joins other Nigerian institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Federal University Lafia, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Kaduna Polytechnic, and the University of Port Harcourt, which have also banned sign-out celebrations.

Sign-out ceremonies, popular among graduating students, typically involve scribbling farewell messages on white shirts and holding mini celebrations to mark the end oftheir academic journey.
