The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have declared a one-day nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, over the Federal Government’s failure to address their long-standing demands.

The two unions, under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), issued a directive to all their branches to convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday to mobilise members for protest activities, including campus rallies, placard displays, and press briefings.

The decision followed JAC’s meeting on October 6, after a comprehensive review of the government’s response to earlier ultimatums issued by the unions.

Among the unresolved issues are the alleged unjust disbursement of ₦50 billion in Earned Allowances, delay in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreements, non-payment of two months’ outstanding salaries, arrears of 25% and 35% salary increments, and non-payment of third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

JAC had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on September 15, which was later extended by 14 days. Both deadlines expired without significant progress.

In a memo titled “Commencement of Protest Actions” and jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions said the protest became necessary due to the government’s failure to address their grievances despite multiple meetings with the Joint Consultative Committee inaugurated by the Minister of Education.

The circular partly read, “Following the inauguration of the Joint Consultative Committee, meetings were held on September 19 and October 6, 2025, at the Permanent Secretary’s Conference Room in Abuja, but our demands remain unresolved despite the extension of the ultimatum.”

“All members of NASU and SSANU in both federal and state universities are expected to strictly comply with this directive,” the statement added.

SSANU President, Comrade Ibrahim, recently accused the government of insincerity, warning that if the issues remain unresolved, the unions may embark on an indefinite strike.

“Ours will not be the mother of all strikes; it will be the grandfather of all strikes,” he said, adding that university non-academic staff have been the worst hit financially, economically, and psychologically.

SSANU and NASU have, like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), been in prolonged disputes with the government over welfare and salary-related matters.
