URGENT: STUDENTS ASSEMBLE IN OYO, DEMONSTRATE SOLIDARITY FOR DANGOTE REFINERY
BY MUNIRAT BALOGUN
Several members of the National Association of Oduduwa Students, the Coalition of Yoruba Students, and the Yoruba Movement are presently conducting a peaceful demonstration in support of the Dangote Refinery, amidst its ongoing conflict with oil unions, including PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria.
The demonstrators gathered on Tuesday at the Iwo Road Roundabout, adjacent to the Ibadan/Lagos expressway in Oyo State, expressing their solidarity through various chants.
They are proceeding along major thoroughfares, brandishing placards inscribed with messages such as, “Do Not Destroy Dangote Refinery,” “StopSabotagingFuelInNigeria,” “EndPENGASSAN,” “EndDAPPMAN,” “DangoteRefineryIsANationalAsset,” and “StopSabotage,” among others.
Dressed in coordinated shirts adorned with the slogan, “Do Not Destroy Dangote Refinery,” the students emphasized that their demonstration aims to attract governmental attention to what they characterize as a “systematic effort by self-serving entities” to undermine the operations of the refinery, which stands as Nigeria’s largest industrial investment and Africa’s premier single-train refinery.
The NAOS President, Olalere Adetunji, urged President Bola Tinubu and pertinent government departments to take immediate action.
“We wish to utilize this moment to appeal to the Federal Government to safeguard the refinery and ensure that the actions of labor and marketers do not obstruct Nigeria’s quest for fuel self-sufficiency. ”
Law enforcement personnel, including members of the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps, are present to uphold order as the demonstration proceeds.
