JUST IN: ASUU DECLARES TWO-WEEK TOTAL WARNING STRIKE ACROSS PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria, beginning midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.
The declaration was made on Sunday by the National President of the union, Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025. Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna said.
The industrial action follows the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over unresolved issues relating to funding of universities, welfare of lecturers, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
Despite ongoing negotiations, the strike indicates a breakdown in discussions between the union and the government. On Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, revealed that the government had reached the final phase of talks with ASUU and other unions to resolve the disputes.
Alausa also stated that the administration had released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances and captured another ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.
ASUU, however, insists that the government’s actions have not met the union’s demands, prompting the strike which is expected to paralyze academic activities nationwide for the next two weeks.
