A hotel receptionist identified simply as Yemi has been murdered by yet-to-be-identified assailant(s) in Ilorin, Kwara State, sparking outrage and raising safety concerns among residents and business owners in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the attacker allegedly gained entry into the hotel and strangled the young woman while she was on duty.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the case reported on Sunday, November 16, by the hotel manager has been classified as culpable homicide. Detectives from A Division were immediately deployed to the scene.
“The victim was found with a white cloth suspected to have been used to strangulate her,” the statement said.
The hotel manager, identified as Mr. Akin, recounted that he woke up to several missed calls from the hotel’s official line. He said attempts to return the calls were met with a disturbing warning.
“When I called back, a man picked up and told me never to call the number again. I rushed to the hotel immediately. On arrival, I found Yemi lying lifeless on the floor and quickly alerted the police,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the killing and tasked operatives with tracking down the perpetrator(s).
“Efforts have been intensified to identify and arrest those behind this heinous crime. No stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice is served. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses,” the command assured.
The brutal killing has reignited concerns over night-time security in hotels and hospitality establishments across Ilorin, with residents calling for enhanced surveillance and stricter safety protocols.
In a separate incident, the police on Tuesday confirmed that suspected bandits killed at least two people and injured one during attacks in Eruku, a boundary town in the Ekiti Local Government Area. A parish of the Christ Apostolic Church was among the locations targeted, with one worshipper reportedly killed and another body discovered in the bush.
