Following the conviction of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal Government on Thursday requested that he be sentenced to death.

FG’s lead lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, filed the request immediately after the court convicted Kanu on all seven counts of the terrorism charges brought against him.

The prosecution argued that Kanu’s incitement resulted in the deaths of several security personnel and the destruction of public property, claiming that both IPOB and its alleged armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), acted to destabilize the nation.

They maintained that the only way to deliver justice to the victims of Kanu’s terrorist activities was to impose the maximum sentence.

According to the prosecution, counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 of the charges carry the death penalty, count 3 warrants 20 years’ imprisonment, while count 7 prescribes a five-year jail term.

“My Lord should take into account the severity and gravity of the terrorist acts committed by the convict, which targeted innocent Nigerians in the South-East,” the lawyer said.

He further accused Kanu of showing no remorse or penitence, noting that his behavior in court had been marked by arrogance.

Additionally, the Federal Government urged the court to order the forfeiture of all broadcasting equipment seized from Kanu and to restrict his access to digital devices and the internet during his incarceration.

For security reasons, FG also requested that Kanu not be held at Kuje Prison in Abuja, citing past jailbreak incidents at the facility.

Meanwhile, before adjourning until 4:10 pm for sentencing, the court heard a plea from Hon. Obinna Aguocha, member of the House of Representatives for Ikwuano/Umuahia North & South, who urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
