The Edo State Police Command has commenced a manhunt for Timothy Gilbert, who allegedly poured acid on his 40-year-old girlfriend, Angela Ogah, following a dispute at Ihovbe Quarters in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City.
The Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the suspect fled after committing the act.
“The Command has commenced a manhunt for the arrest of the suspect, and I am sure he will be brought to justice,” Yamu said.
He disclosed that the incident was linked to disagreements between the couple over allegations of infidelity. He urged individuals to walk away from abusive relationships, stressing that “love is not by force.”
Ogah is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital and is reportedly fighting for her life. According to her lawyer, John Izegaegbe, she was barely able to speak when visited by journalists.
Izegaegbe confirmed that a petition had been submitted to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, requesting urgent intervention.
“We want the suspect to be arrested. The victim is in severe pain,” he said.
“Gilbert is currently on the run after bathing Ogah with a substance suspected to be acid. We are urging the authorities to effect his arrest without delay.”
The incident was first reported earlier this month. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down the suspect and ensure justice is served.
