TINUBU REAFFIRMS HIS SUPPORT TO NIGERIAN ARMY AS COAS CONFERENCE OPENS IN LAGOS

President Bola Tinubu on Monday again showed his support for the Nigerian Army, saying his government is focused on improving the soldierswellbeing, their professional growth, and how well the army runs its operations.

He made this statement at the start of the Chief of Army Annual Conference 2025 in Lagos, and he was represented there by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The President stated that his government will keep supporting the Armed Forces so they can do their job as the Constitution says.

He thanked both current and retired senior military leaders, saying their sacrifices, leadership, and knowledge of the institution have been key in building the Nigerian Army and keeping its fighting spirit strong.

Tinubu said having former military leaders and respected figures at the conference showed that the Armed Forces have a long tradition of professionalism and strength.

He praised the officers and soldiers for being brave and loyal, pointing out that their efforts in protecting Nigeria’s independence and unity will always be remembered in the country’s history.

Tinubu also said the conference was important for thinking about how to improve training, management, and how the forces operate, especially with new security problems coming up.

The Defence Minister, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, said the conference was a key chance to look at how the forces are prepared, check their readiness, and make sure their goals match the country’s security needs.

Musa emphasized the importance of working together between different groups and involving all parts of society to deal with Nigeria’s difficult security issues, and asked commanders to make sure the ideas from the conference actually lead to real progress on the ground.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, thanked the president for sustained political will and strategic support to the Army, particularly in personnel welfare, equipment modernisation, training and reforms.

Shaibu also thanked the National Assembly for its support, saying it had greatly improved the army‘s ability to operate effectively in all areas.

He said the Nigerian Army is still leading the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities.
He also mentioned that the army is becoming more professional, able to adapt quickly, and using more technology.

Also speaking, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu talked about how security is important for development.
He praised the Nigerian Army for keeping the state peaceful and stable. He promised that the Lagos State Government will keep supporting the Army.

The event was attended by senior government officials, service chiefs, former chiefs of defence and army staff, senior military officers, heads of security agencies, diplomats and other dignitaries.

The conference is expected to deliberate on key operational, administrative and strategic issues to further strengthen the capacity of the Nigerian Army.

As part of the activities lined up for the conference, a book on the biography of the late 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, CFR, was unveiled.
