ERRING MOTORISTS WILL BEAR FULL COST OF DAMAGED STREETLIGHTS – LAGOS GOVT

The Lagos State Government has warned road users in Lagos that the cost of replacing damaged streetlights will be fully borne by erring motorists.
The clarification came amid a widely circulated letter on social media, in which one Sulaimon Islamiyat was billed the sum of N5,726,320 being cost of damaged streetlights.

This was disclosed via a statement issued by the Public Affairs unit of the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA).
The statement read; “The Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA) confirms the authenticity of a recently circulated letter concerning damaged streetlights on the Abeokuta Expressway, which was issued through our official channels.
“These solar-powered streetlights represent a major public investment, installed to enhance road safety, provide nighttime visibility, and support the local economy. Protecting this critical infrastructure is a shared responsibility.
“We therefore remind all motorists and residents to exercise caution and care in the vicinity of these assets. To uphold this principle of shared responsibility, motorists found responsible for damaging the infrastructure will be held liable for the repair costs. This policy serves as a necessary deterrent against negligence and willful vandalism, ensuring the longevity of these facilities for all.
“Repair costs are not fixed; they are assessed on a case-by-case basis and depend entirely on the severity of the damage, whether to a single pole or to the entire fitting.
“We appeal to the public to join us in safeguarding this vital infrastructure for the benefit and safety of everyone.”
