POLICE ALLEGEDLY ARREST WIFE, INFANT OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST IN LAGOS- FIJ

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested the wife and nine-month-old child of a senior reporter with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), the organisation disclosed on Monday.
FIJ identified the woman as Adenike Atanda, wife of Sodeeq Atanda, one of its senior reporters. According to the organisation, Adenike and her infant were arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday evening in the Owutu area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
In a report published on its website, FIJ said the arrest followed the tracing of the woman and her child to their neighbourhood by police operatives. The organisation stressed that neither Adenike nor her baby is a journalist and that, as of the time of reporting, the reason for their arrest remained unclear.
“FIJ understands that Atanda’s wife and baby were arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force in the Owutu, Ikorodu area of Lagos on Monday evening after they were tracked to their neighbourhood,” the organisation stated.
“Neither Adenike nor her nine-month-old baby is a journalist. As of the time of filing this report, FIJ has yet to ascertain their crime,” it added.
As of press time, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued any official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the arrest or the legal basis for detaining the woman and her child.
Efforts to obtain clarification from the police were ongoing. Calls placed to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, were not answered, while messages sent to her had not been replied to as of the time of filing this report.
