Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday evening detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The explosion reportedly occurred at about 6:10 p.m. while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayer, triggering panic in the densely populated area.

Although official details were still sketchy as of press time, residents told said  via telephone that several worshippers were either killed or sustained injuries in the blast.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately confirm the incident but disclosed that he was on his way to the scene to assess the situation and gather firsthand information.

The suspected attack has heightened tension in Maiduguri, particularly among residents preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations, amid renewed fears of insecurity in the state.

Security operatives have since cordoned off the affected area to prevent further casualties and to enable preliminary investigations and emergency response efforts.
