Several parts of the country were thrown into darkness on Monday following the collapse of Nigeria’s national power grid.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the development in a statement posted on its official X handle, explaining that electricity supply across the country dropped sharply as the grid went down.

According to NISO, which is responsible for managing and coordinating power supply to electricity distribution companies nationwide, available generation fell to about 50 megawatts as restoration efforts commenced.

The operator disclosed that, as of the time of filing this report, only Abuja and Ibadan were receiving electricity supply, with a combined total of 50 megawatts. This represents a significant decline from the 3,660 megawatts allocated across the country on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

NISO said efforts were ongoing to fully restore the grid and stabilise power supply, while Nigerians await further updates on the situation.
