2027 POLITICS: APC STRENGTHENS POSITION IN ABIA, LP WEAKENS – FORUM

The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East Mandate Forum has stated that the party is regaining ground in Abia State.
In a statement released in Umuahia on Monday, the forum noted that increased political engagement across communities in Abia is beginning to shift the state’s political landscape, despite the Labour Party currently holding power.
The forum added that the Labour Party is gradually losing influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coordinator of the APC South-East Mandate Forum, Chief Onyebuchi Okorie, said in a statement that the APC leadership in Abia, under Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, has been instrumental in driving defections from the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Thousands of grassroots supporters reportedly tore up their former party cards to join the APC.
Okorie suggested that the scale of the defections reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the Labour Party, which currently governs Abia, and a renewed confidence in the APC as a credible political alternative.
“In recent times, we have witnessed thousands of former members of the Labour Party, PDP, and other parties openly renounce their affiliations, tear up their membership cards, and willingly join the APC because they recognize the party’s direction, leadership, and seriousness of purpose.
“This movement is not limited to political elites; it is driven by the people. Confidence in the party has grown, and more citizens are joining.
“What we are witnessing is the revitalization of grassroots politics in Abia, where ordinary citizens feel reconnected to a party that speaks their language and understands their everyday realities,” he said.
“People are joining the APC in Abia not merely out of dissatisfaction with other parties, but because they believe the party will give them a voice, relevance, and protection,” the statement said.
The forum described the ongoing political movement in Abia as more than routine defections, calling it an early sign of a broader shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
“What is happening today is not noise; it is structure. It is not propaganda; it is participation. The APC is steadily regaining its footing in Abia State.
“As Abia approaches 2027, the foundations being laid today will be crucial,” the group added.
“And at the heart of this reawakening is a leader who understands that political victory begins at the grassroots.”
