Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, bail of N500 million pending trial over money laundering charges brought by the federal government.
Malami is required to provide two sureties, each standing in the same amount. Justice Nwite ruled on Wednesday that the sureties must own landed property in Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa, with their documents verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court. The sureties must also submit an affidavit of means.
The court further ordered Malami to deposit his travel documents and two recent passport photographs, and prohibited him from leaving the country without express court permission. He is to be remanded at Kuje Prison until the bail conditions are fulfilled.
Friends, business associates, and sympathizers of Malami have reportedly been mobilizing to meet the bail requirements. Justice Nwite scheduled the commencement of the trial for February 17.
The same bail conditions apply to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz Malami, and an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, Hajia Asabe Bashir.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier filed a 16-count money laundering charge against Malami, his son, and his wife.
