The Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, David Bird, has maintained that the fixed petrol price of N739 per litre at MRS filling stations nationwide remains competitive.

Bird, who heads the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, made the statement during a press briefing in Lagos on Wednesday.

His remarks come amid criticism from some industry players who have accused Dangote Refinery of distorting the fuel market.

Responding to the concerns, Bird emphasized that Nigerians have the option to either purchase Dangote petrol at N739 per litre or choose alternative fuels.

“The retail price is fully competitive. Consumers have the choice, and I would like to see a shift in how the regulator operates in the market,” he said.

He also highlighted the refinery’s performance during the Yuletide period, noting that the Lekki-based plant successfully dispatched 1,000 trucks daily and supplied 500 million liters of fuel, ensuring nationwide availability and price stability.

“We have been able to achieve 1,000 trucks daily and 500 million liters per day,” Bird stated.

On the Naira-for-crude sales scheme, he added that the refinery currently sources about 30 to 40 percent of its crude supply through the arrangement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

Petrol prices in Abuja and Lagos currently range between N739 and N840 per litre.
