Edo State Police Command has disclosed that a resident of Emaudo, Ekpoma, sold his property to pay ransom for his brother, only to discover that the alleged kidnapping was staged.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Eno Ikoedem, the fake abduction was reported to the command on January 10.
The suspect, Idris Isiaka, a vulcanizer from Balogun Street, Emaudo Community, Ekpoma, allegedly orchestrated his own kidnapping with the help of two accomplices and has been arrested.
SP Ikoedem explained that Isiaka “immediately circulated news of his abduction on social media through a blogger and demanded a ransom of Twelve Million Naira. His family in Kogi State was also contacted and threatened with death if the ransom was not paid.”
The suspect’s brother reportedly sold his property and paid part of the ransom, which was shared among the accomplices, Mohammed Saliu and Godwin Mohammed, who remain at large.
“The suspect has confessed to the crime and will be arraigned in court following the conclusion of investigations,” the PPRO added.
