2027 ELECTIONS: APC SET TO LOSE, WARNS OLAWEPO-HASHIM

Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has vowed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be removed from power in the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigeria’s multiparty democracy cannot be undermined by legal or administrative maneuvers.
A veteran of Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, Hashim alleged that the ruling APC is using legal and institutional strategies to weaken opposition participation ahead of the next electoral cycle. He described these actions as part of a worrying trend that threatens democratic competition in the country.
“We have walked this path before under Abacha’s dictatorship, and it ended in victory for genuine democracy, while the plotters of one-man rule were disgraced,” Hashim said.
The PDP presidential hopeful reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multiparty democracy, noting that the nation’s founding fathers deliberately embedded political pluralism in the constitution at independence.
“Our founding fathers chose multiparty democracy, and by the grace of God, that legacy will be preserved. No group, however determined, will succeed in undermining Nigeria’s democratic system,” he added.
Olawepo-Hashim warned against any drift toward authoritarianism, drawing parallels with Zaire under Mobutu Sese Seko, where prolonged one-man rule eroded democratic institutions.
“One-man rule or one-party rule will not happen here. Nigeria will not allow anyone to reduce our democracy to a tragic parody, as happened in Zaire under Mobutu,” he said.
He also raised concerns about selective administrative decisions in political party registration, alleging that some qualified associations were delayed while others aligned with the ruling party received interim recognition.

Calling these trends warning signs of democratic backsliding, Hashim urged Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant in defending democratic norms. He encouraged “lovers of democracy worldwide” to consider lawful accountability measures, supported by credible evidence, including travel restrictions and asset freezes against those undermining Nigeria’s multiparty system.
Emphasising that democracy must be safeguarded through transparency, accountability, and adherence to constitutional principles, Hashim expressed confidence that Nigerians will defend democracy and remove the APC from power peacefully, constitutionally, and at the ballot box in 2027.
