Governor Uba Sani Bags Five Health Sector Awards, Distributes Medical Equipment and Ambulances in Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has been honoured with five awards from various health sector unions in recognition of his efforts to revitalize healthcare delivery and enhance the welfare of health workers since taking office.

The awards were presented on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board headquarters, where the Governor also flagged off the distribution of medical equipment and ambulances to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state.

Honouring him were the Kaduna State Council of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and the Kaduna State chapter of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria. Additional awards came from the Kaduna State chapters of the National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria and the Association of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants of Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sani highlighted key achievements of his administration in the health sector over the past two and a half years. He noted that 255 PHCs have been revitalized and upgraded to Level-2 status, the highest number in the country, to expand access to quality healthcare in underserved areas.

He also announced the establishment of 23 PHC Centres of Excellence—one in each local government area—to provide advanced care, generate health data, and serve as referral hubs. 120 new neonatal corners have been set up across the state to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in rural communities.

The Governor revealed that the state has procured three oxygen plants with robust distribution systems to improve emergency care, while 19 General Hospitals have been renovated to enhance secondary healthcare services. He also upgraded the KADHSMA warehouse to a pharma-grade facility with 1,600 sqm of storage space, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines.

Kaduna State has commenced payment of full 2024 CONMESS and CONHESS salary scales and cleared all promotion backlogs, he added.

Governor Sani explained that the distribution of modern medical equipment and ambulances is aimed at strengthening service delivery, emergency response, and referral systems. He described this as the second tranche of state-of-the-art equipment distributed to PHCs since his administration assumed office. “No mother should lose her life during childbirth, and no child should die from preventable causes due to lack of equipment or timely transportation,” he emphasized.

The Governor also noted that the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board Headquarters is the largest of its kind in Nigeria and will serve as the central hub for driving reforms, monitoring performance, and ensuring every PHC operates optimally.

Welcoming 1,800 newly recruited health workers, Governor Sani said this represents the first phase of a five-year annual recruitment plan, stressing that people are the backbone of healthcare.

He reiterated that his administration prioritizes primary healthcare as the foundation of a functional health system and a pathway to Universal Health Coverage, adding that facility revitalization, workforce expansion, governance reforms, and strategic partnerships are key to ensuring quality healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of location or socioeconomic status.
