The Nigerian film industry was rocked this week after news emerged that actor, filmmaker, and former chairperson of the Enugu state chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Stanley Amandi, had been arrested alongside several serving military officers over their alleged link to a failed coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government.
It was exclusively gathered that the actor was arrested in Enugu, with his family and friends initially believing the Department of State Services (DSS) was responsible.
However, the DSS later “officially wrote” to the family confirming that Amandi was in the custody of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
The actor’s family had “reached out” to the DIA, requesting access for his wife, lawyer, and medical doctor, especially given his hypertensive condition.

According to Premium Times, Amandi is alleged to have been involved in the media and messaging aspect of the coup plot, with authorities suspecting he was positioned as a propagandist to help shape public narratives that could justify or promote the unconstitutional takeover, making him a civilian collaborator in what officials describe as a “serious national security breach.”
The alleged coup attempt first surfaced months ago following discreet arrests within the military.
Investigations reportedly began after a concerned officer alerted senior military leadership about suspicious meetings and conversations suggesting plans to overthrow the government.
Intelligence gathered by the State Security Service later confirmed that some officers were exploring ways to destabilize the country’s democratic order.
The probe allegedly uncovered a network of collaborators and a plan that extended beyond seizing power, reportedly including discussions about assassinating top political figures such as President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
Coordinated arrests were carried out across multiple locations to prevent the plan from advancing. What was initially described as routine disciplinary issues has since evolved into a full-scale national security investigation.
As legal proceedings continue, the case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of its political implications but also due to the rare involvement of a high-profile entertainment figure in an alleged plot of such magnitude.
