The Lagos State Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure orderliness in informal spaces across the state.
The Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, gave the charge when he paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory on Thursday.
Dr. Olumide explained that the essence of the visit was to further sensitise MDAs and intensify advocacy for a clearer understanding of what the government intends to achieve with regard to informal spaces.
To further amplify awareness of the SCRAMP initiative through visits to MDAs, Dr. Olumide said the team comprising the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA), now known as the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA), and the consultant, Octragon, had been engaging radio stations and television houses to speak on the need to prevent improper use of informal and incidental open spaces in the state in order to avert accidents and uncoordinated planning.
He said synergy among MDAs would also help to avoid confusion, confrontation and clashes of duties.
The meeting, which took place at the Berger office of the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory (LSMTL), was attended by the General Manager of the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority, Tpl. Daisi Oso; the Chief Executive Officer of Octragon Multiproject Limited, Engr. The Octragon Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Gbolahan Awonusi, gave instances of untapped and underutilised lands at Ozumba Mbadiwe identified after data mapping, noting that the recovery of such lands would earn the state billions of naira in revenue.
According to him, the essence of the project was to identify such locations, create value by giving the properties a facelift, and ultimately achieve standardisation. He assured that the team would provide people affected with alternate arrangements.
In her remarks, Engr. Abdul commended the Honourable Commissioner and his team, describing the visit as “a force to dislodge hoodlums around the city and keep Lagos State safe for children and all who live in it.”
She outlined the agency’s functions, including online verification, soil testing, material testing and promotion of professional integrity, to ensure compliance with safety protocol as the quality assurance champion.
