EKITI GOVERNMENT DISTRIBUTES N35M TO FIRE DISASTER VICTIMS

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Tuesday distributed N35 million to residents whose properties were recently destroyed by fire incidents across the state.
The governor disclosed that the state government had spent about N100 million on fire disaster interventions in the last 12 months, while an additional N150 million was expended in 2025 to support victims of rainstorms across the state’s 16 local government areas.
Represented by his deputy, Mrs Christiana Afuye, at the presentation of cheques to the second batch of fire disaster victims in Ado Ekiti, Oyebanji said the scale of intervention underscored the people-centred nature of his administration.
Afuye lamented the frequent destruction of property under avoidable circumstances, noting that fire disasters often leave victims traumatised and uncertain about the future. She urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds and adopt proactive safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
“Fire disaster is one of the most devastating experiences any family can go through. In minutes, years of hard work and cherished memories can be reduced to ashes,” she said, adding that while the funds may not replace lost property, they are meant to provide relief and support recovery.
The General Manager of the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Oludare Asaolu, said the Oyebanji administration has strengthened disaster management through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency for training and equipment support.
He commended the governor for the prompt approval of funds to assist victims of fire and rainstorm disasters, noting that such swift interventions have helped to alleviate suffering in the state.
Also speaking, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Head of Operations for Ekiti and Ondo states, Dr Kofoworola Soneye, urged stakeholders to intensify public awareness campaigns on disaster prevention, stressing that disaster management is a collective responsibility.
The Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, encouraged the beneficiaries to become ambassadors for disaster prevention, saying their cooperation was critical to reducing future occurrences.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Idowu Oba expressed gratitude to the governor for the timely intervention and urged recipients to use the funds responsibly while supporting efforts to make Ekiti a safer state.
Recall that in 2025, the Ekiti State Government distributed over N50 million to victims of a similar fire incident as part of its disaster response efforts.
