NIGER ASSEMBLY RAISES CONCERN OVER WATER SCARCITY, DISEASE OUTBREAK

Concerned about the deteriorating water situation in Minna and other major towns, the Niger State House of Assembly has called on the state administration to act immediately.
During plenary, Katcha Constituency member Hon. Yakubu Abdulmalik Bala made a motion emphasizing the terrible circumstances.
He listed some of the main issues facing the industry, including outdated water infrastructure, inadequate supplies, and poor maintenance.
According to Bala, having access to clean, drinkable water is essential for socioeconomic growth, public health, sanitation, and human existence.
He cautioned that hardship and public discontent would continue to worsen in the absence of a planned and sustainable short-, medium-, and long-term strategy to solve water supply issues.
He also cautioned, “Delays in decisive intervention could escalate the situation into a full-blown public health and social emergency.”
Against this background, and after extensive deliberations, the House unanimously adopted all the prayers of the motion.
The House called on the Executive Arm of Government to expedite action on short-, medium-, and long-term sustainable solutions to the persistent water shortage affecting Minna and other major towns in Niger State.
They also noted the need for urgent interventions, including youth empowerment through water trucking businesses, the rehabilitation of dysfunctional boreholes, and other temporary water supply measures.
