Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has reported one death and two infections from Lassa Fever in the state, including a doctor and another woman.
The centre’s Director General, Prof. Mohammed Adamu, confirmed the cases while speaking to reporters.
Prof. Adamu stated that the deceased, a worker with Médecins Sans Frontières, died from Lassa Fever, while the other two contracted the disease after contact with her. The centre immediately activated contact tracing to identify others who had interacted with the infected individuals.
“On 28th January, a white woman from France working with Médecins Sans Frontières developed a fever after a week in Nigeria. She visited a hospital where she received medication, but her condition worsened with signs of bleeding. She was taken to Kano North Central Hospital, where she died the same day. Her body was transferred to the AKTH mortuary, and blood samples tested positive for Lassa Fever,” he explained.
Prof. Adamu added that a doctor from Minjibir who had been in contact with her also contracted the disease, along with another woman.

“The two infected individuals had interacted with 62 people across five local government areas. We identified 25 at risk, tested them, and found 22 negative and three positive cases. One person died, while the two others are in isolation—the woman at AKTH and the doctor at Yargaya Isolation Centre,” he said.
The centre has deployed teams for public education in Minjibir and will invite the Ministry of Environment to fumigate affected areas to eliminate rodent carriers and prevent further spread, Prof. Adamu added.
