LA LIGA: VAR REFEREES HANDED SUSPENSIONS AFTER ERRORS IN BARCELONA DEFEAT TO GIRONA, OTHER MATCHES

The Spanish Refereeing Committee (CTA) has decided to sanction the VAR officials involved in Monday’s Girona 2-1 Barcelona match and Saturday’s Real Madrid 4-1 Real Sociedad encounter, both played on matchday 24.
The refereeing body, led by Fran Soto, will impose an “in the fridge” suspension — a temporary removal from officiating duties — on David Gálvez Rascón, who served as VAR referee alongside Soto Grado at Montilivi.
Meanwhile, Daniel Jesús Trujillo, who performed the same role for Hernández Maeso at the Santiago Bernabéu, will receive a lighter sanction and will be reassigned as assistant VAR for his next appointment.
According to AS, the CTA believes that during the Girona-Barcelona fixture, Echeverri’s challenge on Koundé could have been penalised as a foul committed by the Argentine forward on the French defender. Consequently, the attacking move that followed — which resulted in Fran Beltrán’s 2-1 goal — should have been disallowed.
As Iturralde González, refereeing analyst for AS and Cadena SER, had earlier stated during his commentary on Carrusel Deportivo, the 2-1 goal should not have stood.
Complaints from Barcelona players, along with public criticism from Flick and later Laporta, reportedly hastened the refereeing body’s decision to sanction the VAR official at Montilivi, who did not recommend an on-field review to Soto Grado.
Trujillo, the VAR referee in the Real Madrid-Real Sociedad match, will face a lesser punishment. In his next assignment, he will operate as assistant VAR.
Although the second penalty awarded against Aramburu for a foul on Vinicius generated controversy, the CTA concluded that awarding it was not an error.
