Some police officers were arrested after an “accidental shooting” that killed two people who were walking by in the Alagbado area of Lagos state on Friday.

Abimbola Adebisi, the spokesperson for the Lagos police, said that Moshood Jimoh, the police commissioner, has started an investigation into the event.

The detained policemen were reportedly chasing suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” around the area when they fired the gunshots.

Confirming the incident in a post on X, Adebisi said Jimoh has ordered “adequate deployment of personnel to forestall any breakdown of law and order” in the area.

“The officers involved in the unfortunate shooting incident that occurred today in Alagbado have been arrested and taken into custody,” the police spokesperson said.

Adebisi added that normalcy has been restored to the area, assuring that justice will be served and the outcome of the investigation will be made public.

A user on X who saw the event reported that the police officers involved were from the AIT division police station.

He said the officers, who were on stop-and-search duty, “ran away right away” after shooting people passing by, “leaving the unconscious victims without help until they stopped breathing because they couldn’t get assistance.”

The incident follows a series of cult clashes recorded in parts of the state, particularly in Iyana-Ipaja, Aboru, Badore, Olokonla, Onipanu, and Satellite Town, where at least four people have been reportedly killed, and several others injured.
