Agency Report

The U.S. Secret Service on Sunday confirmed that its agents fatally shot an armed man who illegally entered the grounds of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time (0630 GMT), while Trump was in Washington, officials said.

“An armed man was shot & killed by U.S. Secret Service agents & @PBCountySheriff after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago early this morning,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a post on X.

The suspect, described as a man in his early 20s, was observed near the north gate carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Agents confronted him and opened fire. No Secret Service officers were injured in the encounter.

Trump has previously been targeted by multiple assassination attempts. Earlier this month, Ryan Routh, 59, who plotted to kill the former president at a Florida golf course in September 2024, was sentenced to life in prison.

The threat comes just two months after another attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, when 20-year-old Matthew Crooks fired several shots during a rally, one grazing Trump’s right ear. Crooks was killed by security forces at the scene, and one rallygoer died during the attack. The motive behind that attempt remains unclear.

The Mar-a-Lago incident underscores the continued security risks surrounding the former president, who remains a prominent and polarizing figure in U.S. politics.
