The United States defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to capture the men’s Olympic ice hockey gold at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games, with Jack Hughes scoring the decisive goal and putting an exclamation point on the final medal event of the Games.

Jack Hughes delivered the golden goal in overtime, securing the first Olympic men’s ice hockey gold for the United States since the iconic 1980 “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid.

The high-stakes atmosphere was evident from the start, with the largely Canadian crowd reportedly booing the U.S. team during warm-ups. However, American fans quickly responded with chants of “USA, USA,” which grew even louder after Matt Boldy put the Americans ahead 1-0 in the first period.

Boldy deftly maneuvered past two Canadian defenders and slotted the puck past goaltender Jordan Binnington to give the U.S. an early lead.

USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who had denied the first 24 shots he faced, was finally beaten in the second period when Cale Makar fired a wrist shot that snuck over his pad and into the net.

The Americans nearly regained the lead late in the second period as Brock Faber’s slap shot rattled both posts but somehow stayed out.

In the three-on-three overtime, Jack Hughes delivered the decisive goal, sending his teammates and U.S. fans into euphoria.
