28 STUDENTS EXPELLED OVER DRUG OFFENCES, MISCONDUCT FROM UNIABUJA

The Senate of the University of Abuja, which is now called Yakubu Gowon University, has decided to expel 28 students for different wrongdoing actions, such as cheating in exams, having drugs, and other serious behavior issues.
This decision was made during the university‘s 191st regular Senate meeting, where the members looked at the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee.
The news was shared in a statement on Sunday by Dr Habib Yakoob, who is the Acting Director of Information and University Relations.
The statement said, “The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of twenty-eight students for various disciplinary offences.”
“The affected students were found culpable of serious misconduct, including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university portal for admission, as well as possession and use of hard drugs.”
The Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates earlier issued to 15 former students who failed to honour repeated invitations by the disciplinary committee.
In addition, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations, while 33 others received warnings for offences such as hostel racketeering, conspiracy and fighting.
Reacting to the situation, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate, Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi, said the university will not lower its standards or allow anything that could harm academic honesty or campus safety.
He said, “The academic integrity of the university is very important, and we are ready to take action against anyone who breaks these rules.”
He added, “Our aim is not just to punish students, but also to help them become responsible citizens and achieve academic success.”
Fawehinmi also mentioned that the university is committed to keeping the environment safe and good for both students and staff.
He said, “We will keep enforcing our rules and regulations without any compromise.”
He continued, “At the same time, we are improving our programs for student involvement, counseling, and orientation to encourage proper behavior and stop future problems.”
