Ahead of the upcoming national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the North-Central APC Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that only credible and competent national officers are elected.

The APC convention is slated for March 27–28, 2026, where national officers forming the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) will be chosen.

In a statement signed Thursday by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the forum stressed that consultations should be held to select individuals with proven track records and experience for all NWC positions, including the role of national chairman.

The forum urged Tinubu to lead a thorough vetting process to guarantee that only capable leaders emerge to guide the party’s affairs.

“A proper APC national chairman should be a statesman whose age and experience qualify him to lead a party with so many prominent figures,” the forum said. “An inexperienced individual lacking the ability to manage a political party of APC’s stature is unacceptable.”

Highlighting the party’s rapid growth, especially following the influx of opposition governors and their political structures, the forum emphasized that strong, competent leadership is essential.

“The North-Central APC Forum calls on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that credible leadership is elected at the forthcoming national convention. APC is a party with many seasoned politicians, and electing the best from this distinguished pool should be non-negotiable,” the statement added.

The forum also outlined the qualities it considers essential for the party’s national leadership: age, leadership experience, track record, national acceptance, effective networks, and access to resources. They warned against electing individuals who might exploit the party for personal gain.

Academic qualifications, the forum stated, should not be the main criterion; political skill, capacity, and proven results are far more important. Those who failed to deliver electoral victories in previous elections should be excluded, and religious considerations should play no role in selecting the national chairman.

“Leading APC is not about academic credentials or grammar. It is about competence and the ability to deliver. The national chairman must be experienced, of the right age, and have a verifiable track record,” the forum said.

“Religion should not influence the selection. The national chairman must not be seen as representing one faith over another. Nigeria is a secular country, and the chairman should prioritize national interest above sectional or religious affiliations, representing people of all faiths and ethnicities,” the statement concluded.
