The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, has sustained efforts to cut road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities by 10 per cent through intensified public enlightenment and community engagement initiatives.
As part of this drive, the command held a Church Advocacy Programme on Sunday at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, where worshippers and members of the host community were sensitised on essential road safety practices.
Addressing participants, the FRSC Sector Commander, Bridget Asekauno, explained that the advocacy was aimed at deepening road safety awareness, encouraging responsible use of the roads and promoting strict adherence to traffic regulations.
She noted that the engagement forms part of a broader strategy encompassing critical measures targeted at reducing road traffic crashes across Anambra State.
The Sector Commander highlighted a range of critical road safety issues, including pedestrian safety, the use of safety crash helmets, the dangers of overloading and mixed loading, effective traffic management, the risks of driving against traffic (one-way), the problem of underage driving, as well as the grave consequences of speeding and other forms of dangerous driving.
She urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians to adopt a positive road safety culture and serve as responsible ambassadors of safe road use within their respective communities.
According to her, the advocacy initiative is aimed at strengthening road safety awareness, encouraging responsible road behaviour and ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations, while underscoring the collective responsibility of all road users in achieving safer roads.
Also speaking, Daniel Ileka, the officiating priest, expressed deep appreciation to the Sector Commander and her team for what he described as an impactful and enlightening visit.
Ileka also offered prayers for the Corps and pledged the Church’s continued support in promoting adherence to road safety messages among its members. He further appealed to the Sector Commander to consider the creation of a Special Marshal Unit for the Church.
The programme attracted the participation of the Unit Commander, RS5.32 Nnewi Unit Command, command staff and dedicated Special Marshals, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration. No fewer than 1,500 worshippers and community members were in attendance.
The Church Advocacy Programme held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church was widely described as successful and impactful, further reinforcing the partnership between the Federal Road Safety Corps and faith-based organisations in the collective effort to promote safer roads across Anambra State.
A major highlight of the event was the distribution of road safety flyers and other awareness materials, which helped to reinforce the key safety messages delivered during the church service.
The programme also included an interactive session during which worshippers freely asked questions and received clear explanations on various road safety issues.
The advocacy visit was rounded off with a Thanksgiving session led by the Sector Commander, alongside the Unit Commander of the Nnewi Unit Command and other members of staff.
