Dozens of youths in Òṣogbo on Wednesday staged a protest at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the city’s persistent and unreliable power supply, which also affects neighbouring communities in Osun State.

The protesters, arriving in groups during the morning, carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, accusing IBEDC of neglecting consumers while continuing to issue estimated and prepaid bills despite prolonged outages.

One demonstrator, identified only as Tunde, lamented the impact on residents and businesses. “We cannot continue to pay for darkness. Our businesses are collapsing and households are frustrated,” he said.

Another participant highlighted the strain on small enterprises forced to rely on costly generators. “Fuel prices are high, and we spend more running generators than we earn daily. We need stable electricity to survive,” she stated.

The youths demanded that the company provide a clear explanation for the outages and present a definite timeline for improved supply.

Security personnel were deployed to maintain order, while IBEDC officials held discussions with a delegation of the protesters.

The demonstration reflects growing public concern over electricity distribution in Osun State, as residents continue to call for accountability and sustainable solutions to ongoing power challenges.

Meanwhile, the Management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc, IBEDC, had earlier informed its customers and critical stakeholders of the current low power supply being experienced in Osun Region.

In a public announcement on Tuesday, IBEDC said the development is a direct consequence of reduced energy allocation which has significantly constrained its ability to deliver optimal power supply to their customers.

The announcement reads, “This situation is a direct consequence of reduced energy allocation which has significantly constrained our ability to deliver optimal power supply to customers within the affected areas/communities:

“Iwo, Okinni, Owode-Ede, Cottage, Ede Township, Odo-Ori, Ejigbo and environs.

“Abeere, Oke-Baale, Oke-ljetu, Ita-Olokan, Dada Estate and environs.

“Ikirun, Iragbiji, Iree, Otan Ayegbaju, Iresi, Ila and environs.

“Residents of Isare, Ipetu-Ijesa, Efon Alaaye, Ikeji-Ile, and surrounding areas are affected.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this situation.

“We are actively working with relevant industry stakeholders to improve energy allocation as soon as supply conditions, particularly gas availability to generation companies, stabilize.”
