The management of Yaba College of Technology has confirmed that a student was shot dead on Wednesday at the WAEC bus stop in Lagos. The deceased was a National Diploma student of Business Administration in the college’s Open Distance Learning programme.
In a statement, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Adams Adekunle, said the student was shot after boarding a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Marwa, to Ebute Metta. The college refuted claims that the shooting occurred within campus, although it confirmed that the student had earlier been on campus to sit for an examination.
According to the statement, the deceased and a friend approached the tricycle, with the victim entering first. As his friend was about to board, a gunshot rang out. The friend immediately sought help, and colleagues at the bus stop rushed the victim to the nearby Military Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Eyewitness accounts reportedly indicated there was no prior altercation or commotion before the shooting. The management said preliminary findings showed the attack was carried out by an unknown gunman at the Herbert Macaulay Road mini bus park, dismissing claims that a soldier was involved.
Security agencies, including the police, have launched a full investigation to identify the gunman and establish the motive behind the attack.
The college urged students, parents, stakeholders, and the public to remain calm while investigations continue, and reassured that it would work closely with security agencies to enhance safety measures on and around the campus.
