A Pakistani national, Asif Raza Merchant, accused of plotting to assassinate US President Donald Trump and other senior politicians, claims he was coerced by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to carry out the attempt.
The media reports that Merchant was charged in September 2024 with trying to hire a hitman to target unidentified US officials. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The IRGC has previously attempted attacks against top US figures, including Trump, following the 2020 US killing of their commander, Qasem Soleimani.
During his trial on Wednesday, Merchant provided testimony that he was pressured into the plot to safeguard his family, who were reportedly threatened in Tehran by the Revolutionary Guards.
Merchant stated that he believed authorities would apprehend him before any harm was done. “My family was under threat, and I had to do this. I was not willingly participating,” he explained.
