Russia and Ukraine have agreed to release hundreds of prisoners of war (POWs) between March 5 and 6, Moscow confirmed on Thursday.

The exchange came after humanitarian mediation by the United States and the United Arab Emirates, though the duration of incarceration for the prisoners remains unclear.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that “a complex negotiation process” led to the release of 200 Russian POWs from Kyiv-controlled areas on March 5.

“All those released are receiving the necessary medical and psychological care,” the statement added. “A 300-for-300 exchange is scheduled for March 6.”

Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin handed over two Hungarian-Ukrainian POWs to Hungary during a visit by Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to Moscow.

“They were forcibly conscripted to the front,” Putin stated. “We decided to allow them to travel with the minister on the plane.” Both men had fought in the Ukrainian army and were held in Russian custody. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had requested their release in a phone call with Putin on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Russia hosted the 11th ambassadors’ roundtable, attended by 105 diplomatic heads and international organization representatives. The meeting addressed global developments and the Ukrainian conflict, with a focus on the digital aspects of the crisis and its implications for international information security.
