EDUCATION A TOP PRIORITY IN ABIA – OTTI

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, says his administration is deliberate in its approach to education, underscoring its commitment to reforming the sector.
Otti made the remarks on Wednesday at his office while receiving the Regional Chairman/Enugu State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) East Regional Working Committee.
He highlighted that his government prioritizes education, consistently allocating 20 percent of the state’s annual budget to the sector for three consecutive years.
“We are very intentional because we know the outcomes we want. Education is something we take extremely seriously. The simple truth is that none of us would probably be sitting here today if we were not educated,” he said.
“And that is why, for the past three years, we have consistently allocated one-fifth of our annual budgets to education, and this will continue as long as I remain in office,” the governor said.
He highlighted that his commitment to education includes renovating and constructing schools, improving teachers’ salaries, as well as supporting their recruitment and training.
The governor expressed satisfaction that the state is beginning to see positive results from its sustained investments in the education sector.
“We monitor school enrolments, track student performance across different areas, and work closely to ensure that the outcomes reflect the results we expect,” Otti said.
“So, the facts are already clear, and I am pleased that you have outlined them. There isn’t much more for me to add,” he added, expressing appreciation for their recognition of his efforts to transform the education sector.

Earlier, Comrade Odo Nweke, Regional Chairman/Enugu State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) East Regional Working Committee, which represents the nine states of the old Eastern region, praised Otti for his initiatives supporting teachers in Abia State and encouraged him to maintain the momentum.
Nweke said the union had heard much about Otti’s work and felt it was necessary to express their gratitude, assuring him of teachers’ continued support.
“If we start to enumerate your achievements, they are numerous. We are aware of the 20 percent annual budget allocation to education, the recruitment of 5,394 teachers, and the ongoing recruitment of another 4,000.
“Regular payment of teachers’ salaries, settling the 17 months’ arrears owed by the previous administration, the construction of smart schools in Abia State, and the approval of a 65-year retirement age for teachers—these are just a few examples, sir. We came to thank you for all these efforts,” he stated.
