2027: INEC EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR PARTY MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION SUBMISSION

The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna.
The commission said the extension follows concerns raised by political parties during a meeting held on March 24, 2026, about the previously set timeline.
The original schedule had set the submission period from April 1 to April 21, 2026.
INEC stated that the timeline has been revised to ensure adherence to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
“The commission has agreed to adjust the period for submitting Political Parties’ Registers of Members to align the 21 days prescribed by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, with the actual dates set by the political parties themselves,” the statement read.

INEC further announced that political parties are now allowed to hold their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
“Political parties are hereby informed that they may set the dates of their primaries within the approved window from April 23 to May 30, 2026,” the commission said.
INEC stressed that strict compliance with the revised timeline is essential for a smooth electoral process.
The commission also clarified that parties must submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their respective primaries.
“This extends the final deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members to May 10, 2026, from the original April 21, 2026, date in the earlier timetable,” the statement added.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with political parties to ensure a credible and transparent process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
