A Magistrate Court in Ilorin on Tuesday ordered the remand of two commercial tricyclists, Mohamud Saad and Sunday Emmanuel, following allegations that they assaulted human rights lawyer Taofiq Olateju and his wife, Monsurat Olateju, over a dispute linked to road obstruction.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday along a busy route in Ilorin when the couple encountered a blockage caused by the tricyclists. A verbal exchange quickly escalated into physical violence. Olateju recounted that the attack occurred directly opposite his residence, leaving his wife injured and requiring hospitalisation.

The prosecution based its case on a First Information Report (FIR) filed at ‘C’ Division, Oja Oba, Ilorin, detailing allegations of criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing hurt under Sections 97, 267, and 244 of the Penal Code Law. The FIR stated that the suspects acted in concert to assault the couple after being asked to allow other road users to pass.

The defendants, however, denied the allegations in court.

Magistrate O. M. Adebosin ordered that Saad and Emmanuel be remanded at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility pending further proceedings. The case was adjourned to April 28, 2026, for further mention.
