Former Lagos State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Funso Doherty, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, citing a protracted internal crisis within the party.

Doherty, who joined the PDP in 2024, announced his resignation in a letter shared via his X handle on Saturday. He attributed his decision to recent developments in the party’s leadership structure, particularly a court ruling that nullified its 2025 national convention and deepened internal divisions.

According to him, the judgment effectively ceded leadership control to a faction aligned with individuals backing the re-election of the ruling All Progressives Congress, a situation he described as a major turning point.

The former candidate noted that he had earlier written to the President of the Court of Appeal, urging expedited rulings on pending litigations involving the party due to their potential impact on the electoral process.

Emphasising the need for a cohesive opposition, Doherty warned that Nigeria’s democracy remains fragile and faces increasing threats, making unity among opposition forces more critical than ever.

“For a long time, I have advocated the importance of a united opposition… this is not the time for fracturing and division of opposition political forces that believe in accountability, constitutional order, and the welfare of ordinary citizens,” he said.

He added that his exit from the PDP is partly driven by his commitment to fostering a united opposition front, particularly in Lagos State, ahead of future elections.
