The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an Abuja-based real estate agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, over an alleged property fraud amounting to N288 million.

The anti-graft agency disclosed the arrest in a post on its official X account on Wednesday, stating that Adamu was apprehended by operatives from its Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition.

According to the EFCC, Adamu allegedly collected the funds from a complainant, Alhaji Tanko Yawale, under the pretense of facilitating the purchase of a property in Abuja.

“The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Ahmed Adamu, over an alleged property fraud totaling N288 million,” the commission said.

The suspect allegedly collected the money from Alhaji Tanko Yawale under the pretense of facilitating the purchase of a property at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja, the agency said.

The EFCC further stated that the suspect allegedly did not provide valid documents for the property after receiving the payment, raising suspicions.

“After receiving the funds, Hajia Adamu allegedly failed to furnish the complainant with valid property documents and became evasive, prompting a formal petition to the EFCC,” the commission said.

Property-related fraud continues to be a persistent issue in Nigeria’s real estate sector, especially in major cities like Abuja, where unsuspecting buyers are frequently targeted by agents posing as legitimate intermediaries.

In recent months, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stepped up enforcement against land and housing scams, advising the public to verify property ownership and documentation before making any payments.
