At least 30 students and a teacher have been hospitalised following a gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The incident, which took place shortly after the school assembly on Wednesday, sparked panic as a gaseous substance spread across the school, leaving students and staff gasping for air.
Sources reported that several students collapsed after inhaling the gas, prompting an urgent emergency response.
The affected students and their teacher were quickly taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, for medical attention.
While initial reports suggested the incident may have been triggered by a nearby gas explosion, other sources attributed it to a chemical odor from the school laboratory during a practical session.
It was gathered that a piece of laboratory equipment might have fallen during the exercise, releasing a substance that spread across the school premises.
However, the Vice Principal (Junior School), Mrs. Adeola Borogun, told journalists on Wednesday that there was no explosion, describing the event instead as an unusual chemical smell within the school.
She explained that the incident caused some students to vomit and faint, prompting the school to summon ambulances for immediate medical assistance.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, also confirmed it was a gas leak, but dismissed any suggestion of an explosion or industrial pollution.
“Some people think it came from the school laboratory, while others believe it originated somewhere in the surrounding community.
“We are bringing a gas analyser to the school to determine the type of gas and its concentration. This will help us establish the exact cause,” Oresanya said.
He added that there are no industrial facilities nearby that could have caused the pollution.
“There is no industrial gas source here, so we know it’s not industrial pollution. There was no explosion. It was a gas leak from an unknown source. Thirty students were taken to the hospital, but they are now stable and in good condition,” Oresanya stated.
Confirming the incident, Dr. Banjo Adeoye, Chief Medical Director of General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, stated that 30 students and one teacher were admitted following the gas leak.
He noted that most of the patients were in stable condition, though the exact substance responsible for the incident had not yet been identified.
Also affirming the situation, Ijebu Ode Local Government Chairman, Dare Alebiosu, said no lives were lost and that all affected students were responding well to treatment.
