The Kano State Police Command has arrested a three-man tricycle theft syndicate and recovered eight stolen tricycles across the state.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa.

The statement noted that the breakthrough resulted from an intelligence-led operation by officers from the Kwakwachi Police Division.

Kiyawa explained, “On March 26, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., police officers on surveillance patrol along Airport Road, Kano, intercepted one Abubakar Sidi of Kunkumi Village, Kaduna State, riding a tricycle with registration number NSR 85 WD and KAROTA number KMC 1084.”

He stated that the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the tricycle, leading to his transfer to the Criminal Investigation Department on the orders of the Commissioner of Police for further questioning.

“Further discreet investigations revealed that the suspect had deceived the tricycle owner along Emir Palace Road, Kano, and collaborated with members of his syndicate to unlawfully seize the vehicle,” he said.

Kiyawa added that the police subsequently arrested two accomplices, identified as Abba Babura and Babangida Haruna.

“Following their arrest, the police recovered seven more tricycles stolen by the syndicate, which had been sold in Babura, Jigawa State,” the statement added.

The police spokesman said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate and to trace the rightful owners of the recovered tricycles.

He urged tricycle operators and members of the public to remain vigilant, especially when dealing with passengers.

“We advise operators not to accept drinks or gifts from strangers and to report any suspicious activities to the police immediately,” Kiyawa said.

He also called on individuals whose tricycles were stolen under similar circumstances to visit the Police Public Relations Office at the Bompai headquarters or contact the investigating officer for identification and recovery.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, praised the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to stepping up efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.

Recall that in January, the Ondo State Police Command arrested seven suspects in connection with a conspiracy and theft case involving goods worth ₦20.45 million from a commercial store.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the complainant, Ogunyomi Segun, reported to the Ore Divisional Police Headquarters that between 2024 and January 3, 2026, some of his employees had conspired to steal items from his store.
