The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has responded to criticism over his controversial remarks aimed at Channels TV news anchor Seun Okinbaloye.

Speaking on the media on Monday, Wike clarified that his earlier comment was a figure of speech expressing his frustration.

“It’s really unfortunate. In Nigeria, people often take things out of context, especially when politics is involved,” Wike said.

“Anyone who knows my relationship with Seun would understand that there’s no issue. It was just a figure of speech reflecting how angry I was. I’ve spoken to him, and we have no problem—he said he understands everything.”

The remark came after Okinbaloye, during an interview, warned that a one-party system could threaten democracy in Nigeria.

Wike’s comment, in which he said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist, sparked widespread condemnation, including criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
