An actor, Michael Obeten, has died after sustaining fatal injuries from a cannon malfunction during a Good Friday drama rehearsal in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Obeten, who had previously portrayed Jesus Christ in past editions of the Passion Play, was reportedly coaching younger performers when the incident occurred.
The accident happened at Station 12 of the rehearsal, where a locally fabricated cannon, popularly known as “oginigbo,” and used to simulate thunder effects, malfunctioned and struck him on the head.
According to reports, the blast sent debris flying, leaving the actor with severe head injuries. He was rushed for medical attention and scheduled for emergency surgery but later died from complications.
A statement by the 2007 Mass Communication Alumni Group of the University of Cross River State described the incident as “tragic and avoidable,” alleging that the device was operated by unlicensed individuals.
“Mike Obeten was more than a classmate. He was a leader, a unifier, and a friend to many. His death was entirely preventable,” the group said, while calling for a full investigation and stricter safety regulations at public events.
They also urged authorities to ban the use of firearms and improvised explosive devices at gatherings unless handled by licensed professionals.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Sunday Akata, said the incident had been reported but noted that no formal complaint had been lodged at the Yakurr Division.
He added that preliminary information suggested the actor was buried on April 7, 2026, after he died while receiving treatment at a hospital, believed to be in Abakaliki.
The incident has since sparked renewed concerns over safety standards during public performances and religious events across the country.
