The Kogi State Police Command has arrested suspects linked to the alleged killing of a fresh graduate of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Aminu Abubakar, who was reportedly murdered during a robbery targeting his tricycle.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said the arrests followed a “well-coordinated, intelligence-led operation” that dismantled a criminal network involved in violent crimes.
According to the police, the victim, a resident of the Otokiti area of Lokoja, had recently graduated and was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps when the incident occurred.
Afusat explained that Abubakar left home with his tricycle in search of daily income but failed to return, raising concerns among family members. His lifeless body was later discovered around the CBN area in Zone 8 of Lokoja.
Investigations by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department led to the arrest of two suspects, identified as Garba Godwin Ibrahim and Ashema Usman Samson.
“The suspects posed as construction workers and lured the victim to a secluded location where they attacked him with a shovel,” Afusat said.
She added that an autopsy revealed the victim sustained multiple severe blows to the back of the head, which resulted in his death. The suspects reportedly confessed that the attack was premeditated with the intention of stealing his tricycle.
The stolen tricycle was later sold to one Kabiru Idris in Ayingba. Police operatives tracked and arrested Idris, and a search of his residence led to the recovery of the victim’s tricycle along with four other motorcycles suspected to be stolen.
Further findings revealed that the two principal suspects are ex-convicts previously linked to armed robbery and homicide cases.
Afusat said the investigation had been concluded and the suspects charged before Magistrate Court 5 in Lokoja, where they were remanded in custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies.
The development comes amid growing concerns over violent crimes targeting young people, following a similar incident involving a student of Federal University of Education, Kontagora in Niger State who was recently stabbed to death.
