Agency Report

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has disclosed that no fewer than 20 persons were arrested in 2025 for vandalising railway infrastructure across the country.

The corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, made the disclosure while highlighting the role of the Railway Police Command in tackling vandalism along rail corridors nationwide.

Unyimadu explained that cases of vandalism fall within the jurisdiction of the railway police once they occur across the rail network, noting that the number of arrests largely depends on how well incidents are reported and documented.

He stated that while some cases may not receive adequate follow-up, those properly recorded are investigated, prosecuted, and, where proven, lead to convictions.

According to him, offenders face legal consequences, including jail terms, adding that a recent suspect is currently undergoing trial and is expected to be sentenced upon conclusion of the case.

The corporation reiterated its commitment to safeguarding railway infrastructure, warning that anyone found vandalising rail assets would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Recent incidents underscore the ongoing challenge. In January 2026, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps intercepted a truck conveying vandalised railway tracks in Bauchi State and arrested five suspects, with the materials reportedly hidden beneath bags of chicken feed.

Similarly, in March 2026, security personnel apprehended a suspect, Bashiru Hafeez, at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station after he was allegedly found in possession of 15 pandrol clips believed to have been removed from a railway line.

The suspect was subsequently arraigned in court and remanded pending further hearing.

The NRC maintained that sustained enforcement and collaboration with security agencies remain key to protecting critical rail infrastructure nationwide.
