LAGOS 2027: HAMZAT BEGINS CONSULTATIONS WITH GOVERNOR’S ADVISORY COUNCIL

By: Balogun Ibrahim
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has begun early political consultations with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), signalling initial positioning ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.
Hamzat revealed on his X handle that he met with members of the council on Monday, where he engaged in “thoughtful conversations about the future of Lagos and the kind of leadership it requires.”
He added that the engagement was focused on listening and learning, while emphasising collaboration toward building a stronger Lagos.

The move has drawn attention to emerging succession dynamics within Lagos politics, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) operates a structured internal consultation process that often shapes candidates long before primary elections.
The GAC, regarded as the most influential decision-making body within the Lagos APC, is chaired by Tajudeen Olusi and comprises about 30 senior political figures, including President Bola Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The council plays a key role in succession planning, zoning arrangements, and strategic endorsements in the state.

Hamzat’s engagement with the body is being viewed as part of early political consultations typical of Lagos succession politics, where aspirants engage stakeholders years ahead of elections.
Meanwhile, online political discussions have already begun interpreting the meeting as a signal of endorsement, with some unverified reports suggesting internal consensus may be forming around the deputy governor.

A Lagos-based commentary account further claimed that a GAC member, Otunba Alebiosu, popularly known as “Bush,” was emotional during the meeting after Hamzat reportedly received backing as the APC governorship candidate for 2027.
However, such claims remain unverified.
Members of the Justice Forum, a political bloc in Lagos, had earlier declared support for Hamzat’s gubernatorial ambition.
The Media had also previously reported that Hamzat may emerge as a consensus candidate for the APC in the 2027 governorship race.
