Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that there is a coordinated effort to tarnish his image following reports linking him to an alleged attack on a prosecution witness.

In a statement released on Sunday through his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai strongly denied any involvement in the incident, describing the allegations as false and malicious.

The response followed a report by The Nation dated April 18, titled “El-Rufai’s trial: Gunmen invade principal witness home,” which claimed that a witness in an ongoing case reported an attack on his residence and suggested a possible link to proceedings involving the former governor.

Adekeye said the publication contained “innuendos suggestive of a plot to frame Malam Nasir El-Rufai,” insisting that the narrative was aimed at damaging his reputation and influencing his bail application before the Kaduna State High Court.

He stressed that El-Rufai has no connection to the alleged incident and has instructed his legal team to initiate defamation proceedings.

The statement also outlined recent legal developments, noting that El-Rufai was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, 2026, following an earlier attempted arrest at the Abuja airport. He was subsequently detained and later transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he remains in custody and has been arraigned before two separate high courts.

According to the statement, the former governor has faced a sustained campaign of negative narratives since 2023.

It further urged respect for due process and the rule of law, warning against the misuse of legal procedures.

“The rule of law must not be turned into an instrument of oppression. Legal processes should serve justice, not be used to deny a citizen his liberty while standing trial,” it added.
